Let's be honest, there are still a lot of people in our pews who appreciate the sound of four-part harmony -- and not just from the choir loft! We have experienced a major shift since the dawn of the overhead projector. That tool of the '80s and '90s was replaced by PowerPoint, ProPresenter, and a host of other programs designed to lift our eyes from hymnbooks toward lyrics projected above the stage.
Alongside PowerPoint and ProPresenter came a wave of new worship music that traded-in four-part harmony for catchy rhythms and smooth chord progressions. What we have gained on the stage with our refined worship bands, we have lost in the pews with our simplified melodies.

Just before COVID-19 broke through as a world-wide pandemic, Kari Jobe and Cody Carnes were at Elevation Church, in a songwriting session with Pastor Steven Furtick and Chris Brown. Out of that session came this song called The Blessing. They led it on Sunday at Elevation, and the YouTube video went viral. People all over the world have taken the words to heart as a statement of hope for these challenging days. We have all the resources so you can use this incredible song in your times of worship.
Finding Faith And Hope With "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God"

As we approach Memorial Day and Independence Day in the United States, there is an age-old song nearly 500 years old that rises into our times of worship in both modern and traditional forms. "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" is one of the best-known hymns by Martin Luther, initially composed in 1529, and inspired by Psalm 46. The words remind us to be full of faith in God amidst the challenges we face -- "the flood of mortal ills prevailing". The words ring true in the face of our enemies, whether they be human, spiritual, or even medical. Song Story
What is your only comfort in life and in death? For centuries, believers have learned the Christian faith beginning with that question. It’s the first article in the Heidelberg Catechism of 1563. Why start there? Because death is our common fate. Unless Jesus returns first, we will all die. To find comfort in life, we must know how we can face death. Hope comes only in trusting the one who died to take the curse of death and who crushed the power of death by His resurrection. “Christ has been raised from the dead” (1 Cor 15:20). That is the only statement that can transform how we live each day and how we prepare for our earthly life to end.
The hope of the resurrection spurs us to sing. That’s why a group of songwriters from Getty Music wrote the modern hymn “Christ Our Hope in Life and Death.” Like the Heidelberg Catechism that inspired it, this song is honest about death. There is no need to shrink back from mentioning death in our hymns because we know the Living One who has conquered death forever. The Christian can sing hallelujah because Christ assures us of our glorious future. Now and ever, we confess: “I am not my own, but belong—body and soul in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.

What an incredible decade the 2010s have been for modern worship songwriting. We have seen the rise of some amazing songs from world-class recording artists like Matt Redman, Chris Tomlin, Hillsong Worship, Hillsong United, Bethel Music, Lauren Daigle, and more. I am a huge fan of worship music. As we close out the second decade of the 21st century, I've put together a series of posts that will take you on a tour through the top worship songs during each of the last ten years. Bethel Music seemed to catch some momentum in 2018 with Reckless Love, which only served to set the stage for a song that took the top spot in 2019, Raise A Hallelujah. John and Melissa Helser were known to many from their song, No Longer Slaves, but Raise A Hallelujah seemed to echo a cry of worship that reverberated in congregations all across the nation. Bethel didn't just stop with one song. Brian Johnson teamed up with Phil Wickham to write another top song in 2019 with Living Hope. Hillsong surely would not stand by in silence. King of Kings came late in the 2019 year and shows incredible signs of strength heading into the next decade.

The 2010s will be remembered for years to come as a season when songwriting for congregational worship rose to a level of strength and maturity. It's one thing to have a song be the best of the week, or the month, or even the year, but songs that rise to the top over an entire decade are truly special. They have a hymn-like staying power. What is interesting is that the second and third-ranked songs never actually became the top songs in any one year among the 2010s. However, the height of their peak barely shines a light on the length of their breadth. 10000 Reasons took a clear lead in the 2010s, more than 25% stronger than number two. Cornerstone, This Is Amazing Grace and What A Beautiful Name are all massive worship songs for the 2010s.
