NEW: I Need A Ghost by Brandon Lake

Posted on July 25, 2020

I Need A Ghost is the first single from Brandon Lake’s debut album with Bethel Music titled House of Miracles. The song is a snapshot into Lake’s life journey in realizing that this world can offer a lot of things, but nothing can satisfy like the Spirit of God. With a raw and passionate sonic landscape, the song is a cry of desperation for the baptism of the Holy Spirit; that every moment would be enveloped and led by Him, the one who created us.

Song Story

What is your only comfort in life and in death? For centuries, believers have learned the Christian faith beginning with that question. It’s the first article in the Heidelberg Catechism of 1563. Why start there? Because death is our common fate. Unless Jesus returns first, we will all die. To find comfort in life, we must know how we can face death. Hope comes only in trusting the one who died to take the curse of death and who crushed the power of death by His resurrection. “Christ has been raised from the dead” (1 Cor 15:20). That is the only statement that can transform how we live each day and how we prepare for our earthly life to end.

The hope of the resurrection spurs us to sing. That’s why a group of songwriters from Getty Music wrote the modern hymn “Christ Our Hope in Life and Death.” Like the Heidelberg Catechism that inspired it, this song is honest about death. There is no need to shrink back from mentioning death in our hymns because we know the Living One who has conquered death forever. The Christian can sing hallelujah because Christ assures us of our glorious future. Now and ever, we confess: “I am not my own, but belong—body and soul in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.

Christ Redeemer An Unforgettable Experiential for Easter and Beyond

Featuring Nate Marialke, Influence Music Posted on March 1, 2016

Christ Redeemer / Christ our healer / Christ the victor, servant king / Savior forever, mercy unending / Lord eternal, Price of Peace

When a songwriter pens the song that may be the crescendo of his or her life’s work, it would be great to think that there would be some kind of sign-a bell dinging or fireworks bursting overhead or even a little reveille horn bit to signify ‘This is the one!’ But that never happens. A more likely scenario, especially in the realm of worship songwriting, is this: the Spirit moves, the worshiper/songwriter writes and until the song finds its way into the hearts of the congregation, no one ever knows how far the song will reach or the impact it will have... more

Measureless: The Story Behind the Song

Featuring Shelly E. Johnson Posted on January 22, 2016

One of my favorite aspects of church music is the history. Some Sundays we sing songs that were written a year ago or a decade ago. And some Sundays we sing songs that were written centuries ago.  We get to be part of this beautiful history of God's people singing God's story, generation after generation.

There's an "old hymn" that I have been surprised to discover is largely unknown among many of my worship leader friends. It's called "The Love of God", and it was written in 1917 by a guy named Frederick Lehman ... more

The Story Behind "O Come O Come Emmanuel"

Posted on December 18, 2015

O Come O Come Emmanuel was originally sung by monks in monasteries during the medieval days.  The words of this song were considered so important that a separate stanza was assigned to each of the most pious monks, to be sung from the 16th of December to the 23rd.  In the 1800's, a standard tune was written for it and the refrain was added ... more

The Story Behind "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear"

Posted on December 18, 2015

Here's a carol that was written by an American: Reverend Edmund Hamilton Sears in 1849.  He wrote only two hymns in his life, and "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear" was one of them.  He wrote this carol during the times of social upheaval as a result of the industrial revolution in New England, and also the frantic Gold Rush to California ... more

The Story Behind "O Little Town Of Bethlehem"

Posted on December 18, 2015

When Phillips, the well loved preacher, was a boy, his parents had him and his brothers learn hymns. As he grew older, he loved to write hymns and poems himself, especially for children. He loved all children and as a bachelor standing six foot six inches tall, he loved nothing more than romping with children, laughing at their stories, and sharing their smiles and tears ... more

The Story Behind "Silent Night"

Posted on December 18, 2015

The song, Silent Night, brings us home with still, silent voices in harmony all over the world every Chrismtas. However, did you know there were rodents in the story behind Silent Night? Yes, in fact it was because of mice that Silent Night was written. On a cold Christmas Eve in 1818, Jospeh Mohair was dismayed to learn that mice had nibbled through the organ bellows in his little Austraian parish church ... more
