The Rocks Will Cry Out

As Jesus was entering Jerusalem, the people were shouting, praising God, and irritating the Pharisees. Luke 19 gives us the account of this exciting event. The Bible says that “with a loud voice” the people shouted, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” (Luke 19:38)

In every crowd there seems to be some who feel they should calm everyone down. The Bible tells us King David's wife despised him in her heart when he worshiped the Lord by dancing with all his might! (2 Samuel 6:16)

It's a sad fact that some choose to look at the worshiper and not God!

The Pharisees chose to look at the worshipers when Jesus entered Jerusalem! “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples”, they insisted (Luke 19:39). The Pharisees missed it! They were concerned with the noise. In fact, they may have been worried that Jesus, being called a king would bring Herod, the King of Israel, and the Romans down on them! They were looking at the situation, at the disciples, and at the crowds. They looked everywhere except at Jesus, the Son of the living God.

The lepers, Nicodemus, the woman caught in adultery, Zaccheus and countless others gazed into the face of the Redeemer and were changed! They became worshipers! They could not hold back the worship that is due to the King of Kings!

Jesus answered the Pharisees by saying, “I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out”. (Luke 19:40) Some might say that Jesus was being figurative by saying stones would cry out. Not so. Worship of Jesus Christ must take place. All of creation responds to the awesomeness of Almighty God by extravagant expressions of worship. It must.

Isaac Newton's third law of motion states that “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”. God created. God loved. God cares. So, the natural and fundamental reaction is worship. How can we resist?

Jesus was not overstating the fact that the stones would cry out if worship did not take place.

In fact, scientists with live science.com tell us that, the “Earth gives off a relentless hum of countless notes completely imperceptible to the human ear, like a giant, exceptionally quiet symphony, but the origin of this sound remains a mystery.” They go on to say, “unexpected powerful tunes have been discovered in this hum. These new findings could shed light on the source of this enigma. The planet emanates a constant rumble far below the limits of human hearing, even when the ground isn't shaking from an earthquake. This sound, first discovered a decade ago, is one that only scientific instruments - seismometers - can detect. Researchers call it Earth's Hum.”

Pharisees will say, “Inanimate objects cannot cry out. Stones don't have voices. Jesus, do something about your disciples!”

They don’t understand that worship is the natural and the only response to Jesus Christ, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. It will happen one way or another, and they are invited to be a part of this response. It is a law of reality.

The Bible tells us that “Every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father”. (Philippians 2:10)
