Like a singer needs a new song

Featuring Dennis Jernigan Posted on January 30, 2010

“…Like a singer needs a new song…”

From my earliest memories, having grown up in a very traditional church, I knew the hymns. Not only did I know the hymns we used in worship but I could tell you which hymns we would sing during any given service. Every Sunday night we sang an old hymn called “Oh, Why Not Tonight”. Elizabeth Reed wrote the lyrics in 1842.

Oh, why not tonight? Oh, why not tonight? Wilt thou be saved? Then why not tonight?
For the longest time, I thought the only time someone could be saved was on a Sunday night! I love the old hymns dearly…but growing up I thought I would lose my mind over the monotony of singing the same songs week after week and year after year. Our relationship with God can get in a rut if we are not careful. Discipline and repetition are good…but variety adds spice to our lives…and the Lord desires that we live an abundant life.

Take time to worship God from a new perspective today. Ask Him to reveal Himself in a way you have never seen before.

He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God;
Many will see and fear
And will trust in the LORD.

Psalm 40:3 NASB
