And, on the night of the Lord's birth, when the angel appeared to the shepherds, they were "sore afraid." And the angel said unto them: "Fear not, for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people" (Luke 2:10). God was close to us, because God wanted to be close. Even after we got into trouble with sin and separated ourselves from His presence, he pursued us. He never let us out of His sight. God rescued humanity over and over again. God is still claiming his people today, and doing it by moving in with us, being close.

So the angels said to the shepherds, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people, for unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a Savior which is Christ the Lord" (Luke 2:11). And His name shall be called: "Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:11).
