As I was preparing for the upcoming NGCI, I was in the mode of listening for any words the Lord might have for me and those who would be attending. In addition, I was contemplating the many varied complexities of life and just how quickly I can allow circumstances to bog me down. It is in such moments that I have learned to see life from the King’s perspective – and that foundational perspective? He is God and I am not! As I began to meditate on that simple truth, I began to think about the fact that I am a new creation yet that I still traverse this life as a human – a needy human at that! The realization of my weakness, when juxtaposed with His strength, became the basis of this song. At times, I run from Him…but He runs after me. At times, I hide…but He is always leading me to honest revelation and healing. I cry…He brings laughter. He is God and I am not. It is when I remember this foundational truth that the circumstances begin to become nothing more than brief, momentary annoyances that remind me how much I need a Savior!

God used fantasy to keep me alive in many ways as I was growing up. Due to my fear and my shame, I retreated into an inward world in many ways as a boy. One of the gifts the Lord granted me at that time was the ability to dream of rescue each and every night. The dreams were always the same. My dream-life was lived out on the starship Enterprise and my dad was Captain James T. Kirk. Each night I was captured by aliens – which was a reflection of how I felt in my real life – yet each night I was rescued! At the end of every dream, my dad swooped in and saved the day…saved me! And my mom – Doris Day – sang Que Sera at the end of each rescue! These ‘silly’ dreams somehow gave me renewed hope every day. As I have pondered how God used those fantasies to preserve my mental and emotional sanity and, indeed, be a part of how He led me to freedom, I felt impressed to write a series of stories for boys (and boys at heart!) with that same goal in mind. This song came for a small group of people who came to my home to be a part of what we call the Next Generation Creative Institute. This is a quarterly gathering we hold in our home for the purpose of helping creative souls find more of the creative inspiration and outlet God has for them in this life.

On Wednesday, March 9, 2011, the Lord fulfilled a decades old vision of mine. In 1977, the Lord allowed me to experience the ministry of Keith Green while I was a freshman at Oklahoma Baptist University. This was a life-altering event for me. God used the music of Keith Green to save my life – literally – on more than one occasion. But why and where does Keith Green fit into this story?

Dennis says, "Due to several factors, I went on a 40 day fast. From May 3 until June 12 I fasted and waited on the Lord. To help me through the fast I used a book written by my dear friend, Dean Briggs. That book is called Forty Days & Forty Nights: Fasting Toward Repentance and Rebirth. This book is a collection of daily meditations to grow in the discipline of 40 day fasting. Dean asked me if I would seek the Lord for a song for each day of the fast to go with his book as a companion piece. What a wonderful ride those 40 days became." The MP3s for the songs Dennis wrote during this time are available on the following albums: Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3 and Volume 4.
You may not recognize the name or the face of Dennis Jernigan, but there is a good chance you know some of his music. Songs like “We Will Worship the Lamb of Glory”, “Thank You”, “Great is the Lord Almighty”, “Who Can Satisfy My Soul (There is a Fountain), “I Belong to Jesus”, “Nobody Fills My Heart Like Jesus”, and “You Are My All in All” have been sung widely by the body of Christ since the early 1990s. Having written hundreds of songs (even though Jernigan does not see himself as a song writer but, rather, a song “receiver”), there is so much more to the man than simply a musician.
Dennis has given a great deal of his life to setting the spiritually captive free. Having walked out of a homosexual identity and into that of a new creation, he is convinced that with God NOTHING is impossible. Through the sharing of his story and the sharing of the stories behind the songs, Dennis Jernigan has watched literally thousands walk out of all manner of spiritual bondage and has watched literally thousands of desperate, wounded people find healing through intimacy with Jesus Christ.
If you lead people to freedom, they WILL worship.
Dennis Jernigan has been married to Melinda for 25 years. Together they have nine children (and no, they are not Mormon or Catholic and the children are not adopted…and yes, they kn ow what causes that…and yes, they like it!). The Jernigans decided a long time ago that Dennis’s first priority was that of husband and father so he never truly toured and they chose not to live in Nashville…not that there’s anything wrong with any of that! This was simply the Jernigan’s mandate from the Lord as they saw it. Perhaps that’s why you do not know who he is. And that’s just fine with him.
The life message of Dennis Jernigan can be summed up in one word. Freedom. That freedom has come with a price. Jernigan was born again through his faith in Jesus Christ…but the reality is that the battle for freedom from the lies of the enemy regarding his past identity has been ongoing. His greatest joy has come in seeking intimacy with Jesus Christ – and in the process, discovering greater depths of freedom than he ever realized. And he wants everyone else to know about the possibility of freedom in their own lives. Just check out his series of testimony videos at YouTube.com/user/dennisjernigan and you’ll see what we mean. Every song, every blog, every video, and every book he has written are all interlaced with the theme and hope and possibility of freedom. And so it is with his latest recording, “Kingdom Come”.
“Kingdom Come” is a collection of 15 songs of freedom from Jernigan’s perspective. The underlying theme of his heart is evident. Jernigan says, “If you lead people to freedom, they WILL worship.”
Simply put, Jernigan reminds us that we are to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness…and that Jesus taught His disciples to pray, “Lord, Your kingdom come. Your will be done…” Dennis asks the question, “What would the Kingdom of God look like if His Kingdom was to come in your marriage? Your finances? Your work? Your worldview? If we truly desire that His kingdom come in our lives we need to look at what that really means. It’s all about relationship. And it’s all about the understanding that God is bigger and more in control than we ever realized. “Kingdom Come” has been my heart-cry since the late 1980s when I used to pray every day and ask the Lord to bring His kingdom way of thinking into every aspect of my life.”
Dennis Jernigan has answered the call to the Body of Christ. His desire is to lead others into a deeper understanding of God's love for them, and show how to nurture and maintain an intimate relationship with the Father by the power of the Holy Spirit through the salvation of Jesus Christ. Dennis and his wife Melinda, along with their nine children, live on a farm in rural Oklahoma. Their children are: Israel David (married to Dani), Anne Elizabeth, Hannah Faith, Glory Bethel (married to Shaun Thompson), Judah Paul, Galen Marie, Raina Joy, Asa Robert, and Ezra Thomas.
