About
The first service was held in 1975 on city campus. There were 26 people in attendance. The day started with a fellowship meal shared around two tables. A teaching followed worship.
In the early years, the Sunday gatherings commenced with a fellowship meal at noon. An hour later, an informal worship service was led by several different rotating teams and accompanied by guitars. Teaching followed. When the children got tired, they just took a nap on the floor on one of the mattresses provided for that purpose. The services lasted until about 4:30 in the afternoon.
After several moves downtown, by 1984, it was apparent that the congregation was “bursting at the seams”. The search began, once again, for another rental facility. Over 75 options were evaluated, however, nothing suitable could be found for the 400 people who now called Christ’s Place their church home.
Thus, the idea to build a multi-purpose building that was functional, roomy, durable, and yet attractive became the focus. Over 225 Christ’s Place members worked together pouring cement, framing, hanging drywall, stapling insulation, staining and varnishing woodwork, building cupboards and platform, laying carpet, and cleaning. The church, which is the people, was further built together building a building.
The offices were moved into by Thanksgiving of 1985, and the first service was held on December 22nd. In 1991-92, the church expanded in two ways: through the addition of 6400 square feet of space in two new wings to the original building, and through sending 10% of those worshipping with us and 10% of our general funds to begin a new church in northwest Lincoln, Highlands Community Church.
In the years that have followed, growth has continued and a further expansion process in 2000 added an additional 35,000 square feet. We have since added multiple service times and a venue for college students on Tuesday night called, Campus Church. We are excited about our present growth and what God continues to do at Christ’s Place.
