Galatians 4 lays out a gospel understanding of our adoption in that God sent His son, born under the law, so that we who were under the law could be redeemed and have adoption as sons and daughters of the King. A price was paid, a debt was satisfied. This God did through the life, death, and resurrection of his Son Jesus Christ. So how did we come to be accepted by God? We heard about what Jesus did for us, that He died, was buried, and rose again to pay for our sins. We learned He took our place on the cross and became sin for us 2 Corinthians 5:21 so we could live. One day we did the only thing we could to be accepted, we believed in Jesus. Adoption is the heart of the gospel, built on the foundation that God, in all His fullness, offers us a place in His heavenly household. It is the title of new life; born of the Spirit and brought into complete salvation. To be a child of God is to know complete belonging in its most powerful form. And, on the night of the Lord's birth, when the angel appeared to the shepherds, they were "sore afraid." And the angel said unto them: "Fear not, for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people" (Luke 2:10). At Christmas, as we think of the Lord's birth, we can think of all of the things He has done to take fear out of our lives. We should rejoice that the Lord has come to take away our fears.
