Worshiping As A True Team
Featuring John Chisum Posted on February 18, 2009
I put together a "ladies only" praise team this week at my church in Chicago. We had a great service tonight and I was excited about how well they worked together. They are all fine singers, but I saw in them tonight was the spark of leadership that can go beyond singing a song. Singing a song is far removed from authentic worship leading. I have spent a fair amount of time trying to get them to embrace their personalities and be free to be who God made them to be. They have embraced that concept to varying degrees. Keep Reading >
Worship As Refuge
Featuring John Chisum Posted on January 29, 2009
Well, when life starts to swallow us whole and we feel that all-too-familiar sinking feeling - you know, the one that is accompanied by a loud gasping noise as you go down for the third time - it’s time to remember that God has provided an answer for us in worship.
How To Be An Engaging Worship Leader
Featuring John Chisum Posted on December 28, 2008
It's an interesting experience to encounter life's flat tires that affect your outlook on future events. Sometimes we often lose our love for the things that we are currently involved. When our flame grows faint, God is near to rekindle the fire. All we need is to draw near to Him. Let's listen to John as he takes us down one of his journeys to offer us insight on not losing our flame and love for worshiping God.
Worship Is A Response
Featuring John Chisum Posted on October 20, 2008
Whatever else our worship is, it is essentially a response to God's endless self-giving. Alan P. Ross wrote that worship “refers to the appropriate response to the revelation of the holy God of glory.”1 While we most often think of worship as something that man alone initiates, the perspective of Scripture is clearly that God has placed man in an atmosphere of constant worship, constant response to Himself as the Creator, an entire galaxy of worship that evermore responds to Him in praise.
Never Say Die(t)
Featuring John Chisum Posted on October 16, 2008
Could it be that diets would be rendered useless if I lived a balanced, Spirit-controlled life? Could it be that the excess weight would never appear on my hips and thighs in the first place if I exercised a little more discipline on a daily basis instead of waiting for the mirror to break into hysterical laughter at the sight of my hideous jelly rolls? Undoubtedly, yes, but I'm not entirely there yet. I'm a struggling human, a mere mortal, and I have yet to ascend to the mountain of dietary perfection (though I am determined to never stop trying).
Finding the Perfect Song
Featuring John Chisum Posted on October 2, 2008
Have you ever wished you could find THE song that would make everyone sing along? If you're like me, you've actually thought that you had found it a time or two in songs like, "SHOUT TO THE LORD", or "HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD". Then one day a well-meaning soul in your church comes up after service and asks, "Do we HAVE to sing that song again?" One person actually told me once that they would scream if they had to sing a certain song again. So is there a perfect song out there to be had? The song to end all songs? The answer is YES.
Crop Dusting
Featuring John Chisum Posted on September 25, 2008
Those of us who lead worship, teach, or serve in our local churches have no room to boast when it comes to the spiritual process. God is the one who gives the growth. But that doesn't mean that we don't have a place in the process or are not important to it. God, in His sovereignty, uses us to do His work no matter if it is crop dusting or something all together different.
God Hears Our Complaints and Loves Us The Same
Featuring John Chisum Posted on September 22, 2008
God is big enough to hear the praise and take the complaints.

When The Music Fades
Featuring John Chisum Posted on August 18, 2008
Today is my daughter's last performance as, "ANNIE" (check out my Facebook page for some pics). She's done thirteen shows and has had an absolute blast doing them, but it all comes to an end after today's matinee. You'd have to know her to know that she was born for the part (everyone says so) and that she even came out of the womb with red hair. This was her first lead and she has done a marvelous job, says the proud Papa! It has been her dream to play this part and we've stocked up on anti-depressants now that the show is ending!
Worship In Real Time
Featuring John Chisum Posted on June 21, 2008
Star Trek (the First Generation with Captain James T. Kirk) gives us a terrific way to think about God’s position outside the realm of created time. If you remember, Captain Kirk, ever in a predicament that he must solve or else lose the Starship Enterprise and its entire crew, often spoke of the “time and space continuum" In their sci-fi world, some interruption may occur that thrust them into a time warp and they had just one hour to resolve this problem. In this way, time can be thought of as a line, a continuum that has a beginning, middle, and an end. God, the Creator of time as we know it, stands outside or apart from this continuum and can see it all. He is equally “present" to us, to the people of centuries past, and to all peoples and time in the centuries to come. Hebrews 13:8 declares that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."
Leading From the Overflow of Worship in Your Own Life
Featuring John Chisum Posted on April 10, 2008
One of the greatest challenges for leaders of any type is to stay fresh, avoiding the pitfalls of burning out on the job. Because worship leaders operate on multiple levels, employing natural and spiritual leadership principles, the potential for burnout is much greater. Local church worship leaders must be great musicians, great politicians, great administrators, and great worshipers simultaneously. This is no small task and not one for the faint of heart!
January's Promise
Featuring John Chisum Posted on April 10, 2008
Of all the months, worship may be most like January. Worship is a turning of our hearts from the staleness of our own seasons to God’s ever-springing presence. Worship is the turning of our steps from the worn paths of our sins, depression, and disease into His forgiveness, grace, and endless joy.
Worship, the Trinity and PB&J
Featuring John Chisum Posted on April 10, 2008
What can a peanut butter and jelly sandwich teach us about the Trinity and about authentic worship? Maybe just that the Christian life is a life of balance and self-control perfectly blended into an active and growing faith in God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!
