The Power Of The Cross (A Devotional For Easter)
Oh, to See the Dawn
As the sun rose over Jerusalem, another day began. But this was no ordinary day — this was the dawn of the darkest day. Jesus, the spotless Lamb, walked the road to Calvary, carrying a cross that was not His own. The weight of sin — our sin — rested upon His shoulders as He was tried, beaten, and led to be crucified.
“Oh, to see the dawn of the darkest day / Christ on the road to Calvary.”
How often do we pause and reflect on the cost of our forgiveness? The cross is not just a symbol of suffering; it is a declaration of love beyond comprehension. Jesus willingly bore our sin, enduring pain that should have been ours.
The Weight of Sin, The Wrath of God
As Christ hung on the cross, His body bruised and bleeding, He carried “every bitter thought, every evil deed” of humanity. Every sin — past, present, and future — was placed upon Him. The wrath of God, the just punishment for sin, was poured out on the innocent Son of God.
“Took the blame, bore the wrath, we stand forgiven at the cross.”
The cross is where justice and mercy meet. Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins (Hebrews 9:22). But because Jesus took our place, we now stand righteous before God.
The Curtain Torn, The Victory Won
When Jesus breathed His last, the earth trembled. The temple curtain was torn in two from top to bottom, signifying that the barrier between God and humanity had been removed. The work was finished. The price was paid. The victory was secured.
“Now the daylight flees, now the ground beneath quakes as its Maker bows His head.”
The cross was not defeat — it was triumph! The enemy thought he had won, but the cry “It is finished” (John 19:30) was not a cry of surrender; it was a cry of victory.
Our Names Written in His Wounds
Easter is not just about the death of Jesus — it is about resurrection. The cross leads to an empty tomb. Because He lives, we live. The power of sin is broken. Death is crushed. And our names are written in His wounds, a testimony that we belong to Him.
“Oh, to see my name, written in Your wounds / For through Your suffering, I am free.”
This is the power of the cross. Not just that Jesus died, but that He died for us. Not just that He rose, but that His resurrection means eternal life for us.
What a Love, What a Cost
As we gather this Easter, let us not simply sing these words — let us declare them with gratitude and awe. May our hearts be filled with wonder at the love that held Jesus to the cross and the cost He willingly paid to set us free.
Because of Jesus, we stand forgiven. Because of the cross, we have hope.
What a love. What a cost. We stand forgiven at the cross.
