Day By Day (Devotional)
Scripture: “As your days, so shall your strength be.” — Deuteronomy 33:25
Life often comes at us faster than we feel we can handle. Trials rise unexpectedly, challenges press in, and our hearts can become burdened with worry. Yet, the hymn Day By Day reminds us of a truth that holds us steady: God gives us just what we need, precisely when we need it.
Sufficient Strength for Each Day
“Day by day and with each passing moment, strength I find to meet my trials here.”
One of the greatest anxieties we face is the fear of not having enough — enough wisdom, enough energy, enough provision, or enough faith. But the promise in Deuteronomy 33:25 assures us that God’s strength is not a stockpile we must hoard; rather, it is given fresh each day, perfectly measured for what we will face. Like manna in the wilderness, God’s provision comes in daily portions, teaching us to trust Him moment by moment.
When we focus on what’s ahead, we can feel overwhelmed, but when we rest in today’s grace, we experience His sufficiency. We are not called to carry tomorrow’s burdens with today’s strength — only to walk in obedience with what He has given us now.
His Presence in Every Hour
“Every day the Lord Himself is near me, with a special mercy for each hour.”
Not only does God give us strength, but He walks alongside us as our source of mercy and comfort. He is near in the joyful moments and in the painful ones. The psalmist declared, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). No matter what you are facing today, you do not face it alone.
Our tendency is to let worry creep in and take over. We feel the weight of responsibilities, uncertainties, and hardships, but God invites us to trust in His wise bestowment. He is both our Counselor and Power — giving us wisdom when we need it and strength when we feel weak.
Faith in the Father’s Hand
“Help me then in every tribulation, so to trust Your promises, O Lord.”
Trusting God in trials is not a one-time decision — it’s a daily surrender. When hardship comes, we often wrestle with doubt, wondering why certain difficulties have been allowed. Yet, faith reminds us that even when we don’t understand, we can trust His heart. “He whose heart is kind beyond all measure gives unto each day what He deems best.”
Our trials are not random; they are lovingly mingled with peace and rest, shaped by the hand of a Father who knows what is best for us. If we could see the full picture, we would never doubt His plan. But even without seeing, we can trust.
As the song closes, we are reminded that our days are fleeting. Each moment is leading us toward our eternal home. One by one, we take steps forward, resting in the sufficiency of His grace, until we reach the promised land.
Reflection Questions:
- What burdens are you carrying today that you need to release to God’s daily provision?
- How can you remind yourself of God’s nearness in both joy and struggle?
- What Scripture promises can you hold onto in seasons of tribulation?
Prayer:
Father, help me to trust You day by day. When trials come, remind me that You are near and that Your strength is always enough. Teach me to rely on Your promises, knowing that You hold every moment in Your hands. One day at a time, Lord, I walk with You, until I reach my eternal home. Amen.
