Sadness, frustration and anger are emotions not often embraced as inevitable parts of life—or of our spiritual journey. What do you do when you find yourself in a season of lament? Lament. This long expression of deep pain or sorrow isn't a sign of a *lack* of faith or spiritual weakness. It's a soul-strengthening exercise.

In Matthew 4, Jesus was walking along the seashore. He saw a set of brothers fishing in their boat. He called out to them just as He calls out to you now. He said, “Follow Me.” In that moment, Peter and Andrew had a choice to make. Do they go on doing the good work they are doing, paying no mind to the man inviting them to drop everything and follow Him? Or to they take steps of faith, knowing there is something different about this Jesus? Later, Jesus calls Peter the rock on which He would build His church.
Assurance in the Christian life is two-fold. Our assurance of salvation comes from Christ’s saving work that purchased and granted to us and keeps the fulfillment of all his promises to us (2 Peter 1:4.) Our assurance of faith that Hebrews 10 speaks of is both a gift of God and something we must grow. It comes from walking through trials, conflict, sorrow, hardship that refines, strengthens and deepens our trust in God. Here are songs about assurance.
