I would just like to acknowledge that there are MANY great worship songs being written and used that are not short repetitive choruses, but meaty doctrinal expressions of biblical truth--this is not exclusive to older hymns. And altho we don't often have a hymnbook sitting with our Bible, we are often spending hours of our days listening, meditating and being influenced by great worship music on ipod etc, etc.

It is great to see these practical categories of worship. This will be very effective in planning a worship service

I do add hymns into my sets at least once a month... I don't always do every verse of the song but I pick the ones that express where we are that day. A balance of the old and new songs is always the goal in my mind... I serve a multi-cultural and ALSO muti-generational non-denominational congregation and the weeks I am able to find a great balance of old and new songs...I know everyone has entered in the presence of God...It is awesome to see!

The theology in hymns is amazing! I hope we are not raising a generation of young people who will grow up and totally do not know hymns. I always consider in a set theme to sermon and then try to keep it consistent while at the same time taking into consideration song transition (flow, key changes, etc.). It's a lot to consider. Then there are always these questions: "How well does the worship team know the music? Does the congregation know the song?" (You don't want to be a distraction that will take the focus away from Jesus! When I'm stumped, I always stop and pray a simple prayer: "Father, give me a song. What do You want the worshippers to sing?" Guess what? He ALWAYS does!
