I had a 'discussion' tonight with my Worship Team. The band believes the singers should follow them while singing the worship set. I have been trained that the band establishes the tempo; but ultimately follows or 'accompanies' the singer or singers. What are your thoughts to this on going debate?

Rick - great question. Since the congregation is following the singers so they can participate equally, the singers are to lead by the melody and lyric, the band needs to follow as they establish the groove and harmony. In essence, the band is providing a foundation for the singers to lead in congregational song. They are interdependent of each other.
