Get to know Alex Mejias, lead singer of High Street Hymns.
How long have you been in the Christian music industry?
Since Early 2007 when we released our first self-titled CD.
When did you first have an interest in music?
I (Alex, HSH Director) have been playing one instrument or
another my entire life. I've always loved music and it's an
absolute dream come true to be in music for a living.
How did you come to write your first song?
In college I began my first experiments with writing folk
songs. After almost ten years of that type of writing I
began working on composing music for hymns and crafting my
own original worship songs.
Who are some of your favorite artists?
The Beatles, U2, Bob Dylan, Pierce Pettis and Colin Hay to
name a few. The list is endless though!
Is there a song of yours that is a favorite?
I really like our Advent music, it's so dark and rich - "Let
All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence", "Veiled in Darkness Judah
Lay" and "Creator of the Stars of Night"
Who are your musical influences?
All of my favorite artists and also the great hymn
composers, some of which were classical music icons like
Hayden and Beethoven.
What is your favorite 'worship' scripture?
Just about everything in the Psalms, particularly Psalm 27.
What advice do you have for others who would like to record
their music?
Don't do it alone, collaboration is hard and can be
frustrating, but the best music comes out of it. Look for
other musicians that you respect to write with and to give
you feedback. But don't overdo it, working with 1 or 2 other
people usually is best.
What do you love about where you are right now?
I love that we're making music that churches will integrate
into their corporate worship experience. What a honor and
privilege to contribute to the worship of our God! And I
love finding new (to me) words, especially those written by
people I've never even heard of before. There's an amazing
connection across time that occurs in our work that is
unique and so special.
Where is your dream trip?
I would love to go to New Zealand. That place looks
unbelievable!
What book has inspired you most?
In fiction, I've always love the Lord of Rings series.
Another book that has meant much to me is "The Quiet
Revolution" by John Perkins.
What is your favorite book?
It's hard to pick a favorite. If I could only have one book
with me (besides the Bible) on a desert island it would
probably be "Lifesigns" by Henri Nouwen.
What is your favorite activity outside of your music?
I am a crazy foosball fanatic. I can't play enough of it!
