For the last decade I’ve had the privilege of dancing with my heavenly Father in the midst of a hurricane known as POVERTY. I’ve witnessed countless forgotten stories that have rocked everything I believe about my faith. I’ve been challenged to go deeper to embrace the core of what causes an outpouring of hope to the hopeless, love to the unloved and peace in the midst of suffering.
Not long ago I traveled into a place with my closest friends where we captured a visual and musical experience of forgotten stories in a city dump where over 14,000 families live in the Philippines. On our adventure we discovered children who were overcoming unbeatable odds. We were challenged to ask ourselves, “What would happen if we accepted the greatest invitation in history?”
Each time I walk the dirt roads of the poor it’s as if the Father extends an invitation to show me a true life of compassion through unique expressions of worship. I believe this connection between worship and compassion moves us to sit with a child in the slums, save a young woman from slavery, walk a road less traveled to a place we’ve never been to help someone we’ve never met, sing a song we’ve never sung and believe again that the Church can really change the world.
Out of this experience we have birthed Forgotten Stories, an awareness movement focused on sharing the needs of people who live in extreme poverty. In fact, proceeds from the first DVD/CD, “The Invitation,” will go directly to help those living in this city dump outside of Metro Manila.
I share this with you because on January 26-28th we will be going into the studio to capture another project with worship leader, Paul Stephens. We are asking you to join us through a live webcast hosted at www.forgottenstories.org as we attempt to record an album in three days.
• Stop by the website anytime during these days and watch as we work in the studio. • You can ask us about worship leading, producing a record as well as any questions for the musicians to help you increase your ability as a player. • Help raise awareness for the 14,000 families living in a city dump outside of Manila. • Share with us the forgotten stories you’ve encountered around the world. • Watch for special guests and possibly a few of the children who live in the city dump.
I hope you can join us as we continue to accept God’s invitation to express our worship not only in song but through hearts that are broken for those who live in extreme poverty.
Blessings, Derek
