View all articles by Jennie RiddleI gave my life to Jesus back in 1988. There was a new song out at the time entitled, “I Hear Angels” by Garrit Gustafson. The lyrics read:
“I hear angels singing praises, I see men from every nation, bowing down before the throne… like the sound of many waters… like the rushing wind around us… multitudes. Join the song… and a symphony of praise arises… tears are wiped away from eyes as men. From every tongue and tribe all sing….Holy, holy… God almighty… who was, and is, and is to come..."
I remember looking up and around asking, “Where God? I want to see and hear that too!” Those prophetic words from Mr. Gustafson took residence within me, became the lullaby sung over each of my children, and fueled an earnest, decade long prayer to see multitudes gathered around the throne.
Back in 1999, I had just changed my 20, 446th diaper (yes… I count… don’t you? ), and began singing the aforementioned lullaby over my fourth son, Andrew, as we cuddled in our blue chair. My keyboard was broken down, and I simply didn’t have the energy to set it up; it had been a really tough “mommy” day.The guitar (which I didn’t really play) was accessible, my spaghetti dinner was begging to be cooked and screaming my name… but so was the Holy Spirit!I, again, began telling Him how much I wanted to SEE and HEAR all creation worshipping Him.The songs being sung by the Bride at that time were focusing on need.My heart longed to focus on something far greater than my need, knowing that all needs would be satisfied with just one glimpse of Him.
Therefore, I asked the Holy Spirit to help me write a song that painted Him; a song that the angels and creation were already singing, so that we could join in with One Voice, as One Bride, to One King.My heart recalled Ezekiel 1:26-28 and Revelation 4:
“And then, as they stood with folded wings, there was a voice from above the dome over their heads. Above the dome there was something that looked like a throne, sky-blue like a sapphire, with a humanlike figure towering above the throne. From what I could see, from the waist up he looked like burnished bronze and from the waist down like a blazing fire. Brightness everywhere! The way a rainbow springs out of the sky on a rainy day—that's what it was like. It turned out to be the Glory of God! (Message)
“…a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was[like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns[] of gold on their heads. And from the throne proceeded lightenings, thunderings, and voices… Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal… And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures… And they do not rest day or night, saying: ‘ Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!’…”
I put the baby down to play with his toys, picked up the guitar, and began to play four chords I had “discovered” the day before. Immersed in those scriptures, the Lord helped me paint what I was seeing through those passages," Clothed in rainbows of living color, flashes of lightening, rolls of thunder..." The melody stuck. It had the sound of heaven in it. The song wouldn’t leave me and I sang it for weeks. I can still hear the Lord whispering to me that He would carry this song across the world.I remember thinking how cool it was going to be to have a couple of my missionary friends carry it to the natives in the bush to be sung around campfires.I had no idea…
“Revelation Song” made its very first public outing when I introduced it to my local church on a Sunday when the Lord moved in such a way that it was called for unrehearsed and “on the fly”.The song resonated with the congregation, and Jesus danced, I’m just sure of it.It quickly became a loved song.Next, it was introduced to my students at the high school.God met us every time we used it from that point on.
The first demo of the song was done for me by Walker Beach a couple of months after I wrote it.Klaus Kuehn helped me do a second demo in 2002.They both remembered it when it came time to select songs for the annual live recording at Christ for the Nations where Klaus was leading worship and Walker was directing the School of Worship. They introduced it to the student body during chapel and it was decided that it would be sung by Kari Jobe and released on the“Glorious” album in 2004. The anointing on those gifted worshippers, the excellent production, the tremendous musicianship, and the glory of God was fully captured in that recording.God met us powerfully that night!
Even though I had been writing songs for years, I had not promoted my music and didn’t know how to begin had I wanted to do so.The Holy Spirit kept nudging me and saying, “Give it to the Bride”. Finally, determining to send it to the two places that kept coming to mind, I mustered my courage, obeyed, and sent two recording. That act of obedience was my only attempt to “do something” with the song. From there it spread.Encouragement and support materialized from all corners. Lindell Cooley with Music Missions International, the International Worship Institute, Song Discovery, and LeadWorship.com were instrumental in the early grass roots spread of Revelation Song.
The most widely circulated version, however, that released the song out to the church at large, was recorded by Gateway Church in 2006 under the direction of Thomas Miller and Walker Beach on the popular “Living for You” album. The song was signed to Gateway to be administered by Integrity.I was so impressed with the heart of Michael Coleman and all the folks at Integrity. That same year Don Moen placed it on his personal album entitled “Hiding Place”. That was especially dear to my husband and I as we sang one of his songs in our wedding. In summary, there have now been several different renditions springing up by various artists, colleges, and churches, the most recent of which is another brand new version from Gateway Worship again featuring the unmistakable voice of Kari Jobe on their just released “Wake Up The World” album. The song features a new musical bridge that is absolutely stunning. They have brought the song to a whole new level.
“Revelation Song” has taken on a life of its own, and it has been an intense joy to watch the Father “grow it up”, and to hear the Voice of the Bride sing to Jesus; Her voice is so lovely. I often get asked the song story, and even more often, the question of “how” it got “out there” comes up.My only answer is that God chooses what He chooses. No amount of maneuvering, strategizing, posturing, or pitching would have gotten my music “out there”… whatever that means. I remember telling Jesus with complete sincerity that I could wait until I got to heaven to hear my song sung (although, I also suggested that it would be a terrific song for the angels and great cloud of witnesses to sing when He comes back for us…In the event that He had not already chosen one for the occasion, I didn’t think it would hurt to ask!). That's a great story, Jennie. I know you have many more songs in you - songs that will even surpass Revelation Song. You have an ear for the heart-beat of God, and what comes out is not just "more of the same." Can't wait to hear more.

Jennie, your story really touched my heart. As a student at Christ For the Nations Institute from 1988-1990, I well remember the recording that CFNI did of "I Hear Angels" while I was there. After a very long dry season spiritually--and years since I had listened to that CFNI album-- I pulled my cassette tape out in the summer of 2001--and found myself in tears as I worshipped the Lord with that song. I played "I Hear Angels" over and over again for many weeks--until my tape player chewed it up (alas!). That song has held a special place in my heart ever since. But so does yours. I moved back to the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex in the fall of 2007. It was a tough transition for our family. And once again, I felt dry spiritually. I heard "Revelation Song" at a local church--and later found the CFNI version with Kari Jobe on YouTube. Once again, I was brought to my knees in worship. I bought Gateway's "Living For You" album just so I could play "Revelation Song" over and over again. The worship passages in the book of Revelation are my favorites in the Scriptures, and your song will always be associated in my mind with the heavenly worship of our wonderful Lord. Thank you for sharing this with the Body of Christ!

I first heard Revelation Song at a World Mandate missions conference in Waco,Tx in 2006...it was the highlight of every worship session and I remember being completely undone before God each time it was sung...and also just that it so captured my heart to see Him as He is and to adore Him with all of creation and with the angels and the elders. I have played that song on my cd player and ipod more times than I can count....
I just gotta say that I love your humble heart and I love the diapers and that you counted...and I love that God uses us even when we are in seasons of life when we are overwhelmed and that His whisper calls us out and calls us in closer while the spaghetti waits and the kids play. Thank you for responding to His voice and for what it has meant for the bride! |

Thank you so much for this powerful song. I listen to it daily during my time of worship. It brings me into worship, none like I have ever experienced before. Today I am bringing it to our neighborhood bible study for the ladies to hear. I know they will love it. I remember hearing it for the 1st time. My son was playing it and it just drew me into his room and ever since then I have been hooked! I can't thank you enough for listening to the Lord while taking care of your baby!!!

So many times as we are intimate with God, we have something inside us that has no words to express the emotion or feelings we have. With Revelation Song the combination of music and God's Word I was given new opportunty to hear what my soul cries out. As I listened and worshipped along with the song, I could hear my own voice express the words from deep within that had not yet been spoken. The eyes of my heart finally saw the picture that was familiar yet had not been seen. As I let God's Words and music penetrate every part of me, I knew I was experiencing an echo that comes only from communcation with God. With arms lifted to my Father, I commited once again to stay close to Him on this journey, the journey that will lead me to a face to face time when telling Him how much I love Him, how I honor and reverence Him , how grateful I am to Him, will never be lacking for expression. I know the song in my spirit will be sung forever and the harmony will be from "All Creation". We can only imagine! I praise God for Who He is. He is everything I could ever need or hope for. He is Jehovah God. Some may search for more but they will always be brought back to Psalm 23: "The Lord is ...................................... ." There is nothing or anyone above Him.

I first heard the Revelation Song during a radio top 20 countdown of Christian hits. I think it stayed number one for many weeks. When I hear Philips, Craig and Dean sing this awesome praise song, I want to raise my hands and close my eyes.

God brought me out of a life of destructive drug addiction to opiates. Music has been huge for my time with him breaking down so many walls. Revelation song will always be in my top five. This song has truly blessed me over and over again. We have also implemented it at our Celebrate Recovery ministry and his presence gets thick. How I love this song!

There is no way I can possibly express to you how much this song means to me. Thank you is all I can say. Thank you for listening and responding to Holy Spirit's whisper to you that day while being an ordinary person doing everyday things. We will probably never meet this side of heaven, but I will certainly hug you tightly on The Other Side. Thank you and blessings to you.

I can't express my gratitude for this song. It captured my heart and soul the first time i heard it. I just keep hearing it. I want to sing it out in passion as a love song to my God and feel so close to him in the heavenlies. It's no wonder that I feel this way. You prayed that this song would touch people's hearts this way. I have a deep hunger to be so close to God everytime I hear this song. It penetrates every fibre within me. What a blessing. I was in the military for 20 years. Each time my family and I moved we would adopt a particular song. That made each move memorable. Now, we are retired and our children are grown with children of their own. We recently moved to Florida, and one the way we stopped by old friends and attended their church in Tennessee. The gift song that Sunday was the Revelation Song, sung by a gifted woman and the choir. Tears flowed all over the auditorium - each person touched in a unique way by the beauty of the words and music. My wife and I immediately adopted the Revelation Song as our move song - and have sung it continually ever since. Thank you for your testimony and wonderful gift to the world.

Dearest Jennie, my sister,
I wake up singing this song. It's 3:30 AM and rolling out of my heart. Truly the spirit of the Lord God Almighty used you to give the Bride this praise song. My heart is overwhelmed with joy. My heart skips beats and I could do cartwheels! Once a D J asked, what song could you listen to for 24 hrs nonstop if you had to choose one song, what wold it be? The Revelation song, it doesn't get old. Thank you Jennie for following the spirit. Thank you! |

I first heard "Revelation Song" on a Christian online radio and I liked it right away as I could "see" the angels and "all of creation sing to the King of king". The song now resonates from time to time in my heart and mind. When I hear it again, my heart beats with joy and love for the Lord. I really get this "heaven" feeling you mentioned. Ny now, it has been one of my favorite worship song. I thank God for inspiring you to write it and I thank you for obeying Him. Is there a way to get it translated into different languages (like French in my case) without losing this tremendous and profound call to worship?

on April 24th 2010, I attended the Beth Moore simulcast "So Long Insecurity". It was a live event with over 300,000 attending and singing in one accord at the same time over our nation. Revelation Song was one we sang. I did not really know it but picked it up and sang along.
The amazing thing is this song played over and over in my mind all night. I kept trying to remember the words to the chorus while I was sleeping, and was able to retrieve the few sentences. I woke up with it still in my mind and heart! It continued to play in my head all day Sunday and Sunday night. I woke up Monday researched the song, listened to it on the internet, read the words and cried my eyes out. Then I listened with the video of Jesus and could not stop sobbing! It was so wonderful that morning! So it is Wednesday now, and it continues to ring non stop in my mind, I hum or sing it all the time. My sharing is that I know The Lord did something incredible in me Saturday, my mind is being renewed, and He chose to use this song as part of continuing that process! So when I read your story....I just feel hand picked by Him... we all are, but I never was able to believe that for myself until this last weekend. So this song has not lost it's favor with our Sweet Precious Jesus, and I thought you might like to know that!!! |

We have just been introduced to the Revelation Song in our church choir and I thought I had heard it before, but wasn't sure...I am singing it constantly in my head and humming it everywhere I go...I wanted to read how it all began so the choir would know the story behind this beautiful song...yes, it should be a part of Heaven as it is so much a part of our lives here and now. Thank you for allowing God to share your music with us. it has been comfort.

We were at a Cleansing Stream retreat when we heard it first. It was so hauntingly beautiful that it reduced everyone to tears. I am as sure as I know my name, that this song is God ordained just as the Bible was. It encompasses every emotion, and takes you right to the foot of the Throne. I had just started having visions and what I saw was kind of funny now that I think about it. I pictured me getting into a bright shiny elevator. As the elevator began to move upward, the Revelation Song was playing softly. The further up I went, the louder it became. It seemed as if it was coming from everything. When the doors opened there were thousands and thousands of people and angels singing this song to the one who was on the Throne. The Throne was so bright that I couldnt see who was on it but my spirit knew. I stepped out of the elevator and worked my way closer. All of us were singing this song along with all the flowers and trees and stones that were in this beautiful garden. It truely was the anthem of all creation. Being new believers at that time, it was so hard for me to express what it did to me inside. All I could do was cry tears of emense joy. Ever since then, I have sang this glorius song in my sleep. Thank you for being obedient and writing it. I believe that it is everything you hoped it would be and so much more. Thanks again

I want to sincerely thank God for moving you to write these words....How wonderful! I have 3 kids (7yrs and twin boys that are 2 1/2) and the only thing that kept me from going over the deep end was listening to a local Christian Music station 89.3 KSBJ. I had post-partum depression...luckily I'm a nurse and I recognized the symptoms immediately. I was so humbled by this experience that I did something that I hadn't done in years...Gave my life and my family to HIM! To this day...I feel his presence...carrying us...Thank you for those beautiful, moving words...tears still well up in my eyes when I hear them! God Bless!

jenine. i never knew. am from trinidad i the caribbean. this is SIMPLY AN AMAZING song. the first line sounds just like heaven. it's that simple. i am blown away. it hasn't really rocked the island but maybe i'll make it pop in christian circles. who knows? ( am a musician btw). Curious though its origins seem so ordinary to me; but it speaks volumes of the mystery of god; to turn natural into supernatural. i also perceive you have a clinical approach to spiritual things. i want to go on record and ask jesus too to make this song his personal one when he returns (or maybe for the marriage supper of the lamb). woow!!!!! god bless you!! change more diappers!!! dont stop!!!!!!!!!!!!! lolol

Jennie, I remember the first time I heard the Revelation Song. I was sitting cross legged in my pastor's office working on learning some new music for a brand new small church praise team. I was moved by it immediately. The message, the power in the music, the combination of the two. I listened to it over and over again. I spent months trying to find the music online to no avail. My work schedule does not allow me to shop much. Finally I found it. Our little praise team decided to use the song on our debute Sunday. We were so excited. It was wonderful and has become one of the church favorites. Thank you for listening to the Holy Spirit. I plan to use parts of your story for this months article in the church newsletter for the music section. Thanks

What a beautiful song, I heard it on God TV back in 2006, and I kept on telling people about it, one day I slept over at a friend's place and when I woke up in the morning it was playing in his music system, since then, I have it in my phone, car, everywhere. In 2006 I took it to our band at church and it they just put it aside, until early 2010. We brought it up and today it's an anthem. This is awesome. Thank you for listening to the holy spirit and blessing us with such an annointed song.

The lady wrote a song from the heart based on and using what others had written. Simple and powerful chord structure. She pitched it to a a great label that picked it up and got it out there.
Same as any hit song. The timing was right, she has a good song and she won the music lottery. I don`t think "God" had anything to do with it other than she used his name to promote it. Glad to hear a "housewife" can write a good song and beat the so called "pros". It is all about the song in any genre. |

Hi, I just wanted to add my voice of gratitude to the rest.... I am a recovering drug addict (13 years clean this week) and am so moved by your song. It gives voice to what's in my soul and expresses the words I cannot seem to find when I want to praise God for all he has done to save me. I 've written a tune about my need for persistence in prayer and to not give up trying to overcome old fleshly habits called " Joy Of My Salvation".. it would be an honor if you would take the time to listen to it at www.soundclick.com/andersongs .I'm just hoping it will bless you in some small way since the song you wrote has been such a tremendous blessing to me..thanks again..Your Brother In Christ,Steve Anderson

Chris Tomlin sang it at Student Life Camp this year and words cannot express my worship experience. Jesus is amazing.

This song entered my life and can not be rejected, and will not. If ever PLEASE do not stop hearing
Gods voice, and remember His word is the only TRUTH. Your family life sounds like it takes up a lot of time and is full of love and that is what God wants from you and every one who loves Him, carry on. R.F. Anthony |

I heard this song in my home church in Blenheim, New Zealand and it touched my heart in all the right places. I'm back in China now and we'll be singing it here too. Thankyou for obeying the still quiet voice and spreading a blessing across the world :)

I have been a Christian for over 30 years. This is the most powerful song I have ever heard! I can barely sing it at church because I am so consumed with God's Holy Spirit when I hear it I can't fight the tears to get the words out. God Bless you for writing such a wonderful song!
